Our adventure begins as we ride through the Bosanska Krajina region, known for its scenic backroads and rich history. Crossing into Croatia, we’ll stop at the Željava Airbase, a hidden Cold War relic built into the mountain, offering an eerie glimpse into a bygone era. By afternoon, we arrived at Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its waterfalls and turquoise lakes. It’s the perfect spot to experience Croatia’s natural wonders firsthand.
Today, we take on one of Europe’s most celebrated coastal roads from Senj to Karlobag. This stretch is a biker’s dream, with endless views of the Adriatic and twisting roads carved into the cliffs. Our destination is Zadar, a historic port city with a lively old town and plenty of sights to explore, from Roman ruins to medieval landmarks. Soak in the sunset over the Adriatic and enjoy Zadar’s coastal charm as we wind down after an unforgettable day on the road.
Leaving Zadar, we continue south on the legendary Jadranska magistrala (Adriatic Highway), a road famous for its beautiful seaside views. Passing through Šibenik and Trogir, we eventually reach Split, where a short ferry ride will bring us to Brač Island. Known for its unique beaches and Mediterranean vibe, Brač is home to Zlatni Rat, one of Croatia’s most iconic beaches. We’ll settle in for two nights, giving us time to explore the island’s scenic routes and relaxed atmosphere.
Take a day to recharge on the beautiful island of Brač. Swim at Zlatni Rat, wander along hidden coves, or ride up to Vidova Gora, the Adriatic’s highest peak, for sweeping views of the surrounding islands. Enjoy a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood at a seaside restaurant and soak up the laid-back island lifestyle. Today is about unwinding and savoring Croatia’s coastal charm.
After breakfast, we ferry back to the mainland and set off along the scenic coastal road toward Dubrovnik. En route, we’ll cross the impressive Pelješac Bridge and make a stop in Ston, a medieval town renowned for its extensive fortress wall one of the longest in Europe. By late afternoon, we arrived in Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” This UNESCO World Heritage site captivates with its historic walls, narrow cobblestone streets, and vibrant atmosphere. Spend the evening soaking up the charm of Dubrovnik’s old town, where we’ll settle in for the night, surrounded by centuries of history and stunning views over the Adriatic Sea.
Today we ride south into Montenegro, beginning with the stunning Bay of Kotor, where the Adriatic meets rugged mountains. From here, we embark on the epic climb up Lovćen Mountain, tackling 25 sharp serpentines that will test our skills and reward us with breathtaking views. At the summit, we visit the Njegoš Mausoleum before descending to Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital, where we settle in for the night.
This day takes us into Albania to conquer SH20, also known as the Albanian Stelvio. Famous for its steep hairpins and remote mountain views, this road is a thrilling highlight for any rider. Re-entering Montenegro, we make our way along the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe, as we reach the mountain town of Žabljak. Nestled in Durmitor National Park, Žabljak will be our base as we explore Montenegro’s wilderness.
Today is dedicated to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO site and a haven for nature lovers. We’ll ride narrow mountain roads surrounded by alpine landscapes, dense forests, and glacial lakes. Passing Sedlo Pass and the dramatic Tara Canyon, we cover 140 kilometers through Montenegro’s wild terrain. This day captures the essence of the Balkan Rollercoaster, with rugged scenery and unforgettable riding.
After a restful morning in Žabljak, we ride through Montenegro’s scenic backroads, heading toward Nikšić and crossing back into Bosnia. Our path takes us around Lake Bileća before we reach Trebinje, a picturesque town with a Mediterranean feel. Spend the evening exploring Trebinje’s historic old town and enjoying the relaxed southern vibe of Bosnia’s southernmost city.
Today, we delve into Bosnia’s heritage sites. Starting in Trebinje, we visit the Radimlje necropolis, home to Bosnia’s ancient Stećci tombstones, now a UNESCO site. We continue to Blagaj Tekke, a peaceful 16th-century Dervish monastery built at the source of the Buna River. Our route then brings us to Mostar and its iconic Old Bridge, another UNESCO World Heritage site. We end the day’s ride in Sarajevo, Bosnia’s bustling capital.
Enjoy a rest day in Sarajevo, a city of fascinating contrasts and rich history. Wander through the old bazaars, visit landmarks from the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian eras, or relax at a local café with a Bosnian coffee. This day is an invitation to experience Sarajevo’s unique blend of cultures and traditions at your own pace.
